About Manila

Our Manila Tour features Intramuros Walled City, Rizal Parka visit to the National Museum of the Philippines, and ends with a Sunset in Harbor View.

As the Capital City of the Philippines, Metro Manila (and its core city, Manila) is rich in history and commemoration monuments, in particular those related to the time when the Philippines were a component realm of the Spanish Empire.

1. The National Museum of the Philippines

The National Museum of the Philippines (Filipino: Pambansang Museo ng Pilipinas) is the official repository established in 1901, and the guardian of natural history and ethnography of the Philippines.

It houses, among other art pieces, the Spoliarium, a famous painting of Juan Luna.

Its National Art Gallery is located in the old congress building. The building was originally intended as a Public Library as proposed in Daniel Burnham’s 1905 Plan for Manila.

The Museum of the Filipino People, a component museum of the National Museum of the Philippines that houses the anthropology and archaeology divisions, is located in the Agrifina Circle, Rizal Park, and was formerly housed by the Department of Finance.

2. Rizal Park

Rizal Park (Filipino: Liwasang Rizal), also known as Luneta Park, is a historical urban park located along Roxas Boulevard in Manila, Philippines, near the old walled city of Intramuros. It is one of the major tourist attractions of the City of Manila.

Luneta is also an important site in Philippine history. The execution of national hero José Rizal on December 30, 1896, sparked the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Kingdom of Spain. The area was officially renamed Rizal Park in his honor, and the monument enshrining his remains serves as the park’s symbolic focal point.

3. Intramuros

Intramuros (Latin, “within the walls”) is the oldest district and historic core of Manila. Also called the Walled City, the original city of Manila was the seat of government during the Spanish Colonial Era.

The strategic location of Manila & Intramuros along the bay and at the mouth of Pasig River made it an ideal location in the past for the Tagalog and Kapampangan tribes and kingdoms to trade with merchants from China, India, Borneo and Indonesia

Intramuros was heavily damaged during the battle to recapture the city from the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second World War. Reconstruction of the walls was started in 1951 when Intramuros was declared a National Historical Monument, which is continued to this day by the Intramuros Administration (IA).
